When you write sentences with multiple people taking actions, beware of attributing those actions to the wrong people. Three examples:
“The referees and Trae Young got an earful from Nets head coach Steve Nash after the former drew a series of cheap fouls last night.”
Who is “the former”? Did the referees draw fouls?
