You often see words inserted into a quote with brackets to help make the quote more understandable. Sometimes it’s sensible to do that, such as:
“Every tree [was hit],” Stroud said, surveying the damage as the drone of chain saws carried through the neighborhood. “This used to be a nice shady yard.”
Other times, though, it ruins the quote. For example:
Des…
